The Four Gift Rule
Have you heard about “The Four Gift Rule”?
I just read about it recently and I didn’t know it has been a trend for years, especially during the holiday season. So what is it exactly? The 4 Gift Rule is a gift-giving practice where parents give their children four gifts according to the following:
- Something they want
- Something they need
- Something to wear
- Something to read
While the idea is to give them all four gifts, I think we can just buy one gift as a combination of any of the four, and not really give all four different things. As a frugal mom, I think it’s just a little too much. LOL Also, I don’t want my kids to grow up expecting to always receive a number of gifts on every special occasion.
4 Things to Consider When Buying Children’s Gifts for Any Occasion
Buying gifts for children can be easy or hard, depending on the situation. At the very basic, I suggest that you use the Four Gift Rule as your guide on what to buy and also consider these 4 things:
Relation & Occasion
Are you buying Christmas gifts for your own children? Or is it for your co-workers’ baby shower? Clearly, there is a difference when choosing gifts depending on how you are related to the receiver and for what occasion. Buying your children’s favorite toy for Christmas is nothing but awesome while getting a gender-neutral set of baby clothes & socks would be a nice option for the newborn you are about to meet.
How old is the child? Make sure to buy gifts that are age appropriate and safe. For 1-3 years old, you can go for toys that would spark their curiosity and help develop their skills. For 4+, these kids already appreciate anything they can wear and show their friends – like a new pair of shoes, dress, kid’s watch, etc.
Think about the child. Use what you know about them to guide your decision. Are they into superheroes or cartoons? Are they into animals or dinosaurs? Do they love reading books or are they into sports? Whatever it is that you decide to buy, don’t forget to consider the interests of the child and remember that children’s gifts should be something fun and useful for the years to come.
Gifts that don’t blow your budget
Setting your budget first before browsing for the perfect gift is important. That way you would know which aisle or store to go. Make sure to shop around before deciding to buy that perfect present for the little one.
Quick TIP: Instead of buying toys that only let kids sit down and have too much screentime, encourage them to play outside by choosing toys for outdoor activities. My Baby Care blog has some great tips to get your kids to play outdoors!
